Signs of Invention and Mathematical Continuity in Peirce’s Logic Notebook
in Versus n. 118, Semiotica e matematiche/Semiotics and Mathematics, pp.89-103
Abstract
The article is divided in three sections: (1) We describe the Logic Notebook manuscript and focus on its interest for a study of creativity, leading to a short speculation on “creative reason” and “plastic imagination” in Peirce; (2) We study four precise cases of creative emergence in the Logic Notebook, close to forms of mathematical continuity: differential relatives, existential graphs, sequence diagrams, triadic logic; (3) We extrapolate some general
conclusions related to the semeiosis of mathematics.
