The Problem of Resemblance in Peirce’s Semiotics and Philosophy

di Jean-Marie Chevalier

in Versus n. 120, Peirceana three. Sull’iconismo / On Iconism, pp.45-59

Abstract (italiano)

This paper claims that resemblance and iconicity are two different and relatively independent notions, that resemblance is in some sense more primary than iconicity, and that a complete explanation of resemblance is missing in Peirce’s thought. The paper argues that, Peirce’s semiotics being based on the associationist model, resemblance is present in all mental operations. This discussion is to be connected to the nominalism/realism debate about properties and universals, in which Peirce stands closer to nominalism than expected.
