Born 1942. Professor for European Plurilingualism at Jacobs University Bremen. Professor emeritus of Romance Linguistics at the Freie Universität Berlin. PhD Tübingen 1969. Taught at the Universities of Tübingen, Bari, Rome, Hamburg, Berlin. Visiting Professor at Stanford University (1988/89, 1991), Leipzig (1992), University of California Davis (1997), EHESS Paris (1998, 2003), Limoges (2003), Naples (2005, 2007, 2010), Bologna (2008). Research grants: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (1975), Volkswagenstiftung (1986), Fellow at Collegium Budapest (1994/95), Historisches Kolleg Munich (2001/02), IFK Vienna (2008). Member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (1992). Chairman of the Humanities Division of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (1998-2003). Rector of the Studienkolleg zu Berlin (2003-2008). His fields of interest are: French and Italian linguistics, semiotics, esp. literary semiotics, history of European linguistic thought, philosophy of language, historical anthropology, language politics.
