Eero Tarasti (b. 1948) is professor of musicology at Helsinki University since 1984. He is also founder and President of the Finnish Semiotic
Society since 1979, founder an director of the ISI at Imatra, since 1988, and President of the IASS/AIS since 2004. He is running the international research project on musical semiotics, entitled Musical Signification since 1984. Since 2008 he is directing the EU funded project for a paneuropean doctoral program for semiotics, SEMKNOW, together with four partners: universities of Lapland, Tartu, Turin and Sofia (New Bulgarian).

He has published 32 books on semiotics in English, French, Italian, Finnish and Bulgarian. He is honorary doctor at Indiana University, Estonian Academy of Music and New Bulgarian University in Sofia.
