Omar Calabrese

Omar Calabrese was born in Florence on 02.06.1949, and lives in Monteriggioni (SI). Graduated in Modern Literary Studies in 1971, at present he is full professor of semiotics in the University of Siena, Corso di laurea in Scienze della Comunicazione.
He was visiting professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, and in the Universities of Bilbao, Barcelona, Aarhus (Denmark). He directed the Escuela de Verano of the University of Granada (Spain). He gave lectures in quite every Italian University, and in many main foreign Universities, like Yale, Harvard, Technische Universitat of Berlin, and the Universities of Bogotà, Buenos Aires, London, Zurich, Thessaloniki, Prague, Wien, Mannheim, Porto, Tours, Amsterdam and more.
At present, he is the Dean of the Dipartiment of Comunication Sciences and of the High School of Humanistic Studies in the University of Siena. He was President of the Fundation Mediateca Regionale Toscana, President of the Italian Association for Semiotic Studies , City Councelor of the Comune di Bologna, Major's Delegated to Culture in the Comune di Siena, Prime Minister's Advisor for Media and Communication.
He was Editor-in-chief of the following magazines: "Alfabeta", "Rivista Illustrata della Comunicazione", and "Metafore", and editor of more cultural magazines, like "Casabella", "Estudios semioticos", "Versus". He created the magazine "Carte semiotiche". He was advisor for Rai, TVE and Mediaset tv programs. He writes on the "Corriere della Sera", and collaborated to "Panorama", "El Pais", "Repubblica", "l’Unità". He was curator of the Italian Pavillon in the Expos of Vancouver, Brisbane, Sevilla, Genova and Hannover.
